A salary calculator converts the number on your offer letter into what actually lands in your bank account. Gross pay and net pay diverge significantly once income taxes, social security, Medicare, and any pre-tax deductions are applied. This tool covers 20+ countries, handles monthly and annual inputs, and converts annual salaries to hourly equivalents — useful for comparing job offers across different structures.

Example Calculation

Gross salary: $75,000/year (US, single filer)

Federal income tax: ~$13,234
Social Security (6.2%): $4,650
Medicare (1.45%): $1,088

Estimated net: ~$56,028/year = ~$4,669/month
Hourly equivalent (40h/52wk): ~$27/hr

Simplified Formula

Taxable income = Gross − Pre-tax deductions
Income tax = Sum of (bracket rate × income in that bracket)
Payroll taxes = Gross × applicable rates
Net pay = Gross − Income tax − Payroll taxes − Post-tax deductions
Hourly rate = Annual net ÷ (weeks per year × hours per week)
💡

Why Gross and Net Differ So Much

Tax systems are progressive — each dollar above a bracket threshold is taxed at a higher rate, but only that portion, not your whole income. On top of income tax, most workers pay payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare in the US) and may have pre-tax deductions for health insurance or a 401(k) that reduce taxable income. This calculator applies a simplified but realistic model for each country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this calculation exact?

No — it's an accurate estimate. Exact tax depends on filing status, deductions, credits, and local taxes not modeled here.

Which country's rules does this use?

You select the country. The calculator applies that country's standard income tax brackets and main payroll contributions as of 2025.

How do I compare a $90k job in New York vs $75k in Texas?

Texas has no state income tax; New York's is high. Run both in the salary-to-net tab and compare the net figures.

What's the 40-hour hourly rate for a $100k salary?

$100,000 ÷ 52 weeks ÷ 40 hours = $48.08/hr gross. Net hourly is lower after taxes — use the calculator for your country.
