AI tools save time — but how much, and is it worth the subscription cost? This calculator converts your actual workflows into dollar figures: enter the tasks you've automated or accelerated, your hourly rate, and the time saved, and it tells you monthly and annual ROI. It also flags whether you're getting enough value from each tool to justify keeping it.
Example
Tasks using AI: - Email drafting: 1h/day → 15min (saves 45min) - Code review: 2h/week → 30min (saves 1.5h) - Research: 3h/week → 1h (saves 2h) Weekly time saved: ~7.25h
ROI Formula
Weekly time saved = Σ (Original task time − AI-assisted time) per task Weekly dollar value = Time saved (hours) × Effective hourly rate Annual value = Weekly value × 52 ROI% = (Annual value − Annual tool cost) ÷ Annual tool cost × 100
How to Value AI Time Savings
Not all saved time is equal. Time saved on low-value tasks (formatting, searching) is worth less than time saved on billable or high-leverage work. The calculator weights savings by whether you actually redirect the time to something valuable — if AI writing saves you 30 minutes but you spend it on social media, the ROI is closer to zero. Be honest about the redirect value.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use my billed rate or salary rate?
Use your salary rate for cost-saving calculations (how much employer time you save). Use your billed rate if the saved time goes to client work.
Which AI tools have the highest ROI?
Coding assistants (Copilot, Cursor) consistently show 20–55% productivity gains in studies. Writing assistants and research tools show 10–30%.
What if I can't measure the time saved accurately?
Track one representative week with and without the tool. Even a rough estimate is better than ignoring the value entirely.
When should I cancel an AI subscription?
If you can't identify at least 5× the monthly cost in value from the tool, it's not earning its keep. Recalculate quarterly as usage changes.
